Art has been influential to our lives. It can stir something in us, a feeling, an emotion, a memory, a thought, an idea, or an ideology. What makes art so influential? What kinds of art and artworks have been the most influential? Let’s take a look.
What is Art?
Understanding what art is, is an important part of studying the history of art. Art can take many forms, some of them are liberal arts, mechanical arts, fine arts and applied arts. The 20th century principal arts are divided into nine, architecture, dance, sculpture, music, painting, poetry, photography, and graphic arts.
But that paragraph doesn’t answer our question, “What is art?” To answer that, we take a dictionary and it says:
“…the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
The very first kind of art found in history dates back to the Stone Age. During that era, some 25000 BCE, man is an avid hunter and they lived in cage. In the cages, they often paint something such as animals, events or their family. Cave painting is probably the very first form of art that we can call. Sometime after that, about 5000 BCE, humanity started agriculture and societies started to be complex and religion gained importance. Handicrafts began to be popular during this time.
Sculpture also started to grow around 8000 BCE, and there are ancient figurines found in different places of the Earth. Those first figurines are said to be attributed to fertility cults, an example is the Venus of Willendorf.
As time passes by, crystals, quartz, jasper, etc. are discovered and this started a new era of art making. There were rock art, especially the notable rock art of the Iberian Mediterranean Basin.
With the use of elements like copper, bronze and iron, art started to transform and monuments were began to be built. An example of the metal age wonder is the Stonehenge. There are also a lot of temples built all around the world. Plus, swords, shields, decorations and many other metallic ornaments can also be considered as art.
Modern age art are composed of paintings, buildings, sculpture, figurines and computer generated graphics. The use of technology also affected modern day art, especially with the advent of computers. Digital paining is one of the most popular kind of artwork nowadays.
